Qatar, along with the rest of the world, experienced challenging conditions during the second quarter of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic struck and Qatar was locked down. Hugely increased demands on our network meant we had to step up to the plate for our customers and for Qatar.
We saw an 11,000% increase in the number of video calls made, a 3,500% growth in the demand for online learning sessions and a fivefold increase in the number of gamers taking part in online contests.
In response to this massive demand, we carried out network upgrades and capacity boosts at hundreds of sites across the country, installed additional mobile towers near field hospitals, doubled internet speeds free of charge, had our engineers working around the clock to ensure reliability for the many millions of video calls, and optimised our networks for educational establishments so they could provide lessons for the many students learning from home.
Even entertainment wasn’t missed; we boosted our systems to handle the massive increase in the demand for online gaming, with ping times shortened to ensure optimum gaming experiences, and extra channels were added to TV packages.
